FAQs

What are the benefits of an electric bike?

Electric bicycles offer an environmentally friendly transport solution that is fast, and cost-effective. They are particularly well suited for commuting to and from work, ensuring you won’t arrive all hot and sweaty.

An electric bike effectively flattens hills, increasing your average speed and eliminating the ‘groan’ factor.

Head winds are also no longer a problem - power assisted electric bike pedalling makes it easy.

How do electric bikes work?

Electric bikes are power assisted bikes, which means it is designed to work in conjunction with pedalling. So if you normally pedal at a rate of 20 km per hour, you could expect to reach speeds of 30-40 km per hour on an electric bike, without any extra effort.

Although designed to assist pedalling, Electric bikes also provide “power-on-demand” which means you can get away with not pedalling at all!

Is there a speed limit for an electric bike?

Our Electric Bikes can only reach a capacity of up to 40 km with normal pedalling (rider weight contingent).

Electric bikes are treated just like ordinary bicycles as far as Land Transport New Zealand are concerned.

Do I need a licence to ride one?

All electric bikes fit into Land Transport regulations, which do not require a licence or registration. There are also no age restrictions for riding an electric bicycle.

What is the power consumption on an electric bicycle?

It’s roughly 1KW of power for every 100 Kms. This is next to nothing when you consider that the cost of 1KW of electricity in New Zealand ranges between 20-50 cents on average.

What is the life of a battery, and how often does it need recharging?

Batteries should be fully charged before use. All bikes come with SLA batteries which require charging at least every 30 days.

Rechargeable batteries do not last forever. Battery life depends on use and conditions.

What’s involved in ongoing bike maintenance?

Diligent battery charging is the most important factor in ongoing maintenance. General bike care, such as keeping tires pumped up is also essential. If you have any concerns, please contact us.
